AARHUS, Denmark—Hermes Airports, the operator of Larnaka and Pafos airports in Cyprus, is focused on closing existing connectivity gaps to European capitals following a record-breaking performance in 2023 when passenger numbers exceeded 11.6 million.

Speaking at Routes Europe 2024, Maria Kouroupi—director of aviation development, marketing and communication—highlighted the rebound in passenger traffic at both airports, attributing it to sustained growth efforts and expanded market reach. Currently, 55 airlines operate 150 routes from Larnaka and Pafos airports to 38 countries.

“Moreover, the winter season had an increase of 12% compared to the corresponding period of 2023, contributing now over 24% of the total traffic,” she told Routes. “This is particularly important as it showcases that our efforts with our airline partners as well as the island’s tourism stakeholders are paying off.”

Looking ahead, Hermes Airports aims to maintain growth in air connectivity and traffic levels, despite industry challenges. Strategic objectives include closing gaps in European capitals such as Madrid, Ljubljana, Brussels and Lisbon, while enhancing weekly frequencies on existing routes.

“Ensuring year-round connectivity remains of paramount importance, as we aim for greater winter contribution, supported by collaborative efforts with airlines and tourism stakeholders to promote Cyprus as a year-round destination,” she added.

“As far as our long-term strategic objective is concerned, we’re working on establishing connectivity with North America or Asia, a goal achievable through collective engagement with stakeholders both locally and internationally.”
