UPS And Boeing's 767: A 25-Year Partnership

In January 1993 UPS ordered 30 Boeing 767-300 freighters, the first of which entered service in late 1995.

Fast forward 25 years and in June 2018, the Louisville-based cargo airline ordered another pair of the same aircraft. In total UPS has ordered 68 of the Boeings, of which nine are still on order, according to Aviation Week’s Fleet Discovery database. The company has also taken on three former Japan Air Lines passenger 767-300s which were converted to freighters and joined UPS in 2018, giving the package delivery company's airline a current fleet of 62.

What is so unusual about this fleet is that the same model has been ordered by the same airline over a period of 25 years. It says a lot about how UPS utilizes the 767 all over its global route network, but also about the reliability and robustness of Boeing’s first widebody twin. Originally entering service with United Airlines in 1982, few would have predicted that in 2019 the production line would remain well and truly open, with UPS’s rival FedEx still taking delivery of a substantial number of 767s. Unlike UPS though, FedEx only began 767 operations in late 2013. Given the longevity of modern widebody freighters, it’s conceivable that some of these aircraft will still be in service in 2050, almost 70 years after the first flight.
