Swiss MRO SR Technics has opened a new aircraft maintenance hangar in Malta which will focus on both narrowbody and widebody aircraft repair services.

The facility, located at Malta International Airport, has a volume of 430,000 sq.ft for up to six narrowbody aircraft of the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 families simultaneously.

It is the largest steel structure ever built in Malta, according to the country's government and cost an estimated €42 million ($45.7 million) to construct.

The facility includes workshop space, increased capacity for heavy maintenance, C-checks, and cabin modifications for up to six narrowbody aircraft at a time.

“This hangar will support continuous improvements and efficiency and be a major success factor for a sustainable future of SR Technics Malta,” says Arthur Magri, general manager of SR Technics Malta.

SR Technics Malta plans to take staff numbers up to 500 people over the next two years at the facility, which is considered a center of excellence for narrowbody aircraft.

SR Technics undertakes work for several airline customers in Malta, having been established in the country since 2010.

Notably, this includes British low-cost carrier Easyjet, with whom the company renewed a base maintenance contract for an additional two years in January 2022 covering two lines of base maintenance work.
