SINGAPORE—Malaysia Airlines and Spirit AeroSystems signed a memorandum of understanding on Sept. 21 at Aviation Week’s MRO Asia-Pacific exhibition to develop nacelle and flight control MRO services for Boeing 737NG aircraft.

The companies intend to provide this maintenance capability for both Malaysia Airlines’ 737 aircraft as well as for other operators.

“The MOU that we signed today is critical for us to enhance our composite capacity,” says Ahmad Lugman Mohd Azmi, Malaysia Airlines Berhad group chief operating officer.

The next step is forging a general terms agreement for the partnership, which he thinks can be completed within “six months or so.”

Malaysia Airlines currently can repair nacelles and thrust reversers on wing, to Level 2 repairs, but bigger repairs require the parts to be taken off the aircraft and sent out for repair. The partnership with Spirit would allow it to perform those repairs in-house, which would save time and costs.

This agreement follows partnerships that Spirit has forged with EGAT and GAMECO earlier this year.
