Super Tucanos bearing serial numbers TT-3111 and TT-3103 were lost in the accident.
SINGAPORE—Two Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) Embraer A-29 Super Tucano crashed into a mountainside in East Java on Nov. 16, resulting in the loss of four lives, the service has confirmed.
The two aircraft were part of a flight of four that were flying in a box formation when they lost radar contact at 11:18 a.m. local time, the service said.
TNI-AU spokesperson Air Cmdre. R. Agung Sasongkojati told local media that the two aircraft—bearing serial numbers TT-3111 and TT-3103—were found "in distinct locations" but on the same northern side of the mountain.
“Embraer is aware of an accident which occurred with two A-29 Super Tucano aircraft operated by the Indonesian Air Force. The company extends its support to investigating authorities, in pursuit of the causes of the accident.” Embraer told Aerospace DAILY.
The Super Tucanos are part of Air Sqdn. 21 from the Abdulrachman Saleh Air Base. The aircraft are used primarily for counterinsurgency operations.
Squadron commander Lt. Col. Sandhra Gunawan, air base wing commander Col. Subhan, chief of air base personnel Col. Widiono Hadiwijaya and Maj. Yuda Seta lost their lives in the accident.
TNI-AU acquired 16 Super Tucanos in 2011. One of these was lost in a 2016 accident.
