1. Sustainable Deicing

Company: Cryotech Deicing Technology

Product: Cryotech Deicing Technology launched its own Type I and Type IV propylene glycol-based aircraft deicing/anti-icing products in 2010. The company says Polar Plus LT has low aquatic toxicity and the lowest operational use temperature in the industry for a propylene glycol-based fluid. Polar Guard Xtend is a next-generation propylene glycol-based Type IV fluid, which Cryotech says features longer hold-over times, vibrant color and an improved environmental profile, while retaining key properties to optimize application and efficiencies. Cryotech also manufactures sustainable acetate-based airport runway deicers, which biodegrade with low toxicity to vegetation and aquatic life.

2. Lifetime Lubrication

Product: The Chemours Company offers its Krytox line of performance lubricants to aircraft MROs, OEMs and tier suppliers. Krytox perfluoropolyether-based oils and greases offer lifetime lubrication for critical flight components such as oxygen systems, turbines, gimbles, pumps, valves, actuators, spline shaft, o-ring and seal applications. In addition to durability under high vacuum and extreme temperature conditions, Chemours says they also can endure exposure to fuels, oxidizers and radiation, and demonstrate long wear and low energy consumption due to excellent friction-reducing characteristics. Chemours says its Krytox oils and greases are nontoxic, non-flammable, inert, non-evaporative and compatible with most metals, elastomers, plastics, paints and finishes.

3. The Only Aviation Fuel Biocide

Product: Biobor JF, the flagship product of Hammonds Fuel Additives, is still the only biocide permitted for aviation fuel. Purchased by the Houston-based company from U.S. Borax in 1991, Biobor JF was originally formulated as an anti-knock additive for premium gasoline before its introduction as the first fuel biocide. Biocide JF is also a lubricity additive, reducing engine wear scar by almost 20%, according to Hammonds. Biobor products are also designed to extend fuel shelf life and efficiency, which Hammonds says makes them burn cleaner, resulting in less harmful emissions and fuel waste.

4. Chrome And Solvent-Free Options

Product: Henkel has a full portfolio of OEM and military-approved chemical products, including chrome-free and solvent-free options. Its chemical portfolio includes aerospace composite, metal bonding and potting adhesives; surface preparation products; new lightweight materials such as infusion resins; paint strippers; and engine overhaul chemicals. It also supplies aerospace coatings and surface protectants. Henkel’s Bonderite S-ST 1270-5 paint remover is free of hazardous and toxic chlorinated solvents, phenol, chromates, alkali and acids used in conventional paint removers.

6. Clean Machining

Product: The Orelube Corp. has manufactured and marketed Boelube since 1958 under an exclusive license from Boeing, which developed the proprietary family of lubricants. Boelube is available in liquid form as well as pastes and solids, providing high lubricity to prevent heat buildup in minimum quantity lubricating machining. The company says Boelube reduces friction, speeds production, increases tool life, improves surface finish and results in cleaner machines and shops. Orelube also says the product’s lubricity is greater than that of high volume, water-based coolant, making chip removal easier. Boelube lubricants are dermal non-irritant and biodegradable.

7. New Aerospace Adhesives

Product: PPG’s global aerospace business manufactures coatings, sealants, transparencies, engineered materials and more for the commercial, regional, military and general aviation segments. Its two newest aerospace adhesives, PPG PR-2936 and PPG PR-2940, are used to bond internal and external structures of an aircraft. PPG says a standout feature of PPG PR-2936 is the combination of tensile and compressive strength over a large operating temperature range of -56F through 200F. PPG PR-2940 is a low-density, lightweight, flame-, smoke- and toxicity-compliant epoxy syntactic paste adhesive designed for potting, filling and reinforcing metallic and non-metallic honeycomb structures used in manufacturing aircraft interior components.
